The Durham Ox on Norwood this week added a 32oz steak to their menu, and I was invited to try one.
Publican Ian Pollard had posted a picture of the steak on Facebook, and it looked like an easy task to eat one.
On my arrival at the Durham Ox Ian showed me the steak; I was taken aback by the size of thing and was wondering just what I had let myself in for.
Despite the size of the steak (it came on its own plate) there was a portion of salad, chips and onion rings served with it, minus the peas as I do not eat them.
Mine was quite well done, and I wasted little time in starting to eat my through the 32oz of meat on my plate.
At first, I thought I was doing really well, trimming away at the edges, dunking in it a nice helping of English Mustard and all washed down with a nice cold pint of lager.
It did not, however, take too long before I was struggling, much to the delight of the people in the pub. After about thirty minutes of eating I was beaten; the steak had won.
What I sent back to the kitchen was most of my chips and some of the meat, some onion rings and some salad.
This was less a case of Man Vs Food and more like Southern Softie Vs Food and in this case, the food won hands down. However, I am sure there are many more people who will pass this test with flying colours.
The meal came with a warning that it is ‘not for the faint hearted’, and I can certainly vouch for that.
Priced at just £22.95 with all the trimmings it is good value.
The only question is: can you handle Beverley’s Biggest Steak?
