Beverley Library hosted an event that saw super league player Chris Green read to a group youngster, many of whom were keen rugby league fans.
Green who is 23 plays his rugby for challenge cup runners up Hull FC and was in Beverley with the club mascot Airlie Bird as a part of a scheme to encourage young people to get stuck into their local library and Try Reading.
Supported by the National Lottery and Arts Council England events like this one involving players from Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers have been happening throughout the East Riding.
Green was tasked with picking and reading a sporty story to the group, a daunting task for the man mountain by his own admission. Selecting a book called The Ratty Racers by Maddy McClellan Green did great job passing the challenge with flying colours.
Jessica Thewlis a Librarian with the East Riding Library & Information Service said;
“We have had over 100 people attend so far, and we have one more to go. Events like this help create new ways for the library to engage with young people while trying to encourage them to read.”
After he had finished reading Green answered questions about his career as a professional rugby player. He encouraged them to read and also to take part in sport, any sport not just rugby league.
Green’s presence helped bring people into the library who may not normally come in, the prop forward was very gracious and a lot of time for the youngsters.
Everyone who came to the session was entered into a draw to win a Limited Edition Rugby League World Cup Ball, a prize that was won by 10-year-old Alex Nuttall.
The final event in will take place in North Bridlington on 19th October and will again feature a player from Hull FC.
Green, however, will not be at that event in North Bridlington, the player has been selected for the England Knights, who have a match at the Salford City Stadium that’s being played as a curtain-raiser to England’s World Cup warm-up clash against Italy later in the day.
