Wawne Beat Beverley Town On Opening Day of the Season

Beverley Town FC got their Humber Premier League Campaign off to the worst possible start suffering a heavy defeat to Wawne United.

Town looked out of sorts going down 6-1 Kingswood College as United made light work of the visitors.

Speaking after the match Wawne’s manager Gareth Waterhouse, who is in his first season in charge of the team told HU17.net;

“I was overwhelmed by the result today. Beverley Town are a decent side and while I wanted a positive result I never thought we would win like that.”

“Take nothing away from Beverley, they looked a well drilled and organised team. At times they played better football then we did.”

“For me the difference between sides was fitness. We have worked really hard pre season on team fitness and I think that is what ultimately won us the game today.”

Wawne took the lead early on when Gareth Wadforth capitalised on a mix up at the back to fire the home side ahead.

Town got back on level terms through Jared Mills who converted from the spot but Wanwe soon edged in front as Matty Crane found the back of the next.

Wanwe added a further three goals in the second half, Crane again scored, with Jamie Eccles, Shaun Ryan and Leon Smith all finding the back of the net.

Town gaffer Ross Cording in his post match simply said “It was men v boys.”

Waterhouse who took over the job after guiding Wawne’s reserves to a treble last season. The club have merged both teams and are targeting a top six fiinsh in the Humber Premier League.

Speaking about the clubs ambitions for the new season Waterhouse said;

“We want to be challenging at the top of the league. We finished near the bottom last season and I want to improve on that.”

“If you ask the lads in the dressing room they will tell you they want to win the title, for me, while it may not be a realistic goal it is the right attitude to have.”

“Personally I am pleased with how my first competitive game in charge has gone. I enjoyed how it went and of course the result.”

Town will not have to wait long to redeem themselves. They return to action Tuesday night when they host Hornsea Town at Norwood.

Final Score: Wawne United 6 Beverley Town FC 1
