Shoppers in the centre of Beverley got a bit of a surprise on Saturday when two cars drove the WRONG way through the crowds.

Packed streets full of people could only move out of the way as two cars drove up Toll Gavel before rejoining the road.

With no wardens or police on hand nothing could be done and given the recent security issues some people were for a moment visibly concerned.

While this is not an uncommon thing in Beverley, to see vehicles driving through the town centre evening during the hours when they are not supposed to.

This Saturday was particularly busy. People were out with young children and some with their pet dogs. As the photos show there is not a lot of room for error.

Unconfirmed reports said the motorists took this route as the car park was blocked by a lorry. HU17.net has reported in the past as wagons and even refuge lorries drive onto the pedestrian area outside of the times they are allocated.

Shop keepers in Beverley have for years said vehicles are always driving through the town centre unchallenged and saying it is an issue that concerns them.

Last summer when Beverley Town Council hosted special events at Wednesday Market, there was a procession of vehicles passing through all of which were totally ignoring the rules clearly shown on the signs.

Given that all the politicians and Councillors that were out canvassing for the elections it will be interesting to see if this incident prompts any of them to seek measures that can put in place to tackle the issue.
