The Treasure House in Beverley will host an illustrated talk by Barbara English and Margaret Pinder: ‘Speaking the landscape: the road to Hull’s Beverley Gate in 1642′ will explore the road from Beverley to Hull’s Beverley Gate in 1642. The talk will be on Wednesday 26 July from 2pm-4pm.
Maps of Hull and the East Riding of the 16th and 17th centuries, plans of great interest newly discovered in national collections, together with travellers’ descriptions and government records, show different aspects of Hull and Beverley in the years leading up to the Civil Wars.
In 1642, King Charles I travelled from Beverley to Hull’s Beverley Gate to demand admittance to the town. The refusal to admit him was the first hostile act of the wars, which were to change England forever.
Barbara English is Emeritus Professor of History at Hull. She has a number of publications to her name as well as radio and TV appearances, and was awarded an MBE for services to heritage in 2015. Margaret Pinder has three Masters degrees including a Cambridge MA in English and Modern and Medieval Languages.
She has taught summer schools at both Harvard and Oxford on topics including creative writing and Shakespeare. She is a qualified solicitor practising maritime law in the City. As a local councillor she was Mayor of Beverley from 2012-2013.
