News that Government is to plough £197M into the region has been welcomed by the MP Graham Stuart. However, some see it as a desperate attempt to secure votes as the UK crashes towards a no deal Brexit.
The Stronger Towns Fund was announced by the government s they look to try and sure things up ahead of Brexit.
Mr Stuart said he was delighted with the news adding that constituents have always been his top priority, he said;
“I’m delighted with this news which builds on our recent investment successes. Securing £3.7m to Hornsea towards the largest ever investment in the town for the Leisure Centre revamp, the £40m to Beverley towards the Jock’s Cross junction reconfiguration.”
“Also we hope to hear soon if we’ve won £3m funding towards Withernsea’s coastal erosion protection scheme.”
“My top priority is and has always been, to see my constituents prosper. It is a constant battle, one which I revel in, to get the money we need to keep on bringing home jobs, attracting tourists, improving education, and enhancing leisure facilities.
“£197m for Yorkshire and Humber from the Stronger Towns Fund. Local people can bid for with their creative ideas, is fantastic.”
Mr Stuart never wanted to leave the EU and was a firm remainer. However, the MP failed to convince his constituents of his view who instead voted to leave.
He has also made it clear he will support the government and Mrs May’s deal. Mrs May was well defeated after tabling her plans which certainly did little to please either side of the debate.
He added;
“When Beverley and Holderness voted in 2016 for Brexit, it was a message for change. The Stronger Towns Fund will help bring transformation, control and empowerment.”
Investment In North Delights MP But Is It A Desperate Attempt To Win Support For Failing Brexit Deal?
While the fund has been welcomed by the MP some say it is nothing more than a bribe.
Some MPs feel the cash promised to the North is a desperate attempt by the Prime Minister to win backing for her deal.
Theresa May is also being accused of kicking the can down the road. Furthermore, she is accused of dragging the country towards what will be a disastrous no deal situation.
MPs are set to vote again on her deal with many expecting the government again to be defeated. The announcement of the cash is seen as a way to ‘greases the wheels’ ahead of that vote. It’s one final attempt to win support from across the house.
Some MPs have warned the PM that there is ‘no price on their votes’ as she and her waring government face rocky time in the coming days. Last time she took her deal to the house she suffered a humiliating defeat. Her deal was rejected by a staggering 230 MPs.
