Tamiya 1/35 Panzer Kampfwagen IV Ausf.D was a build undertaken as a bit of an experiment. It started out with the intention of doing hairspray chipping. After applying the primer, the base coat was applied followed by a clear coat. Then came the hairspray.
For the main colour, I had to use Model Color German grey. This was due to the lockdown and not being able to get the materials of choices locally that is Tamiya paints. The quality of these paints is really impressive. Thinned with just some drops of water and it sprayed like a dream, while also drying quickly too.
After all of this I started chipping, it was a disaster, I was really unhappy with how it looked. As a result of this, the decision was made to respray in the Model Color Grey.
Determined to ensure this was a learning curve and lack of consumables at my disposal I used regular chalk to weather it. This was a slow process. I applied various shades and between each application applied a flat coat. The shades used were black, blue, brown, yellow and red.
For the metal type parts, I used Ammo Mig pigment. I love this stuff, it honestly is one of the best things to achieve and a decent metal look. Furthermore, it is so simple and it can be used for a range of things.
The only regret is not using the figures which came with the kit. This is because the decision for buying and making this was only for one reason, to try out chipping. As a result of this choice, I closed all the hatches up.
Tamiya Panzer Kampfwagen Makes An Enjoyable Build But Won’t Temp Me Back
Would I revisit this kit? Well, I am not sure about that one. It was OK but I feel there are other options within the same price that more enjoyable. One such model is the Walker Bull Dog Tank by Tamiya.
However, given the size of the model based on the cost, it is another model that offers good value. There certainly is plenty of scope with this kit.
