Developers Awarded Contract

NHS East Riding of Yorkshire has appointed Interserve as lead development partner for the construction of the new Community Hospital in Beverley. The hospital will provide an exceptional range of inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic services in a 21st century environment for patients, staff and visitors.

Interserve Health will lead a team that includes Aedas Architects, Capita Symonds, and Curtins Consulting, together with its own in-house engineering, healthcare planning and building services. These collectively have a wealth of experience in health care planning, installation and construction for projects of this size and scope. Aedas lead architect Helen Revitt is a highly experienced health care architect who has specialised in primary care and mental health design since 2002.

The company has a proven track record working with Primary Care Trusts to design and deliver projects and has recently led the construction of the Mill Lane care facility in Beverley for East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

A key factor in the appointment of Interserve Health was the company’s experience in involving the local community and stakeholders in many aspects of their projects to help promote a positive patient experience. Wherever possible the company utilises local suppliers and labour to help sustain the local economy.

It is anticipated that the brand new Community Hospital will include:
•    30 bedded in-patient ward
•    Out patients department
•    Minor Injuries and Out of Hours Service
•    Diagnostics (X-ray / ultrasound)
•    Therapy services
•    Social Services
•    A base for the Neighbourhood Team
•    Mental Health services

The intention is to construct a building sympathetic with its surroundings, with the use of sustainable and natural materials in the design and construction. Interserve Health has already begun work on design and clinical service modelling with a view to presenting outline planning permission in Summer 2009

Karen Knapton, Chairman of NHS East Riding of Yorkshire said:
“This is a very special development for Beverley and the East Riding generally and getting the right design and feel for the building is important. I am delighted that we have been able to appoint a developer that recognises the value in working with local people throughout the project.”

Ivan Ellul, Chief Executive, NHS East Riding of Yorkshire said:
“Appointing Interserve Health as our lead development partner is a major step forward for the project which will move towards seeing work starting on site next year.”

Roger Spark, Project Lead, Interserve Health. said:
“We are very pleased to be appointed to lead the development of the new Community Hospital for Beverley and surrounding area and have brought together a strategic and local supply chain with the specialist knowledge and experience to deliver the new build.  As a company we have gained a great deal from working with the local community on a variety of social, educational and environmental projects and look forward to working with NHS East Riding of Yorkshire and its stakeholders.”

Background information
•    Interserve Health has been appointed via ProCure 21 – a procurement method for publicly funded NHS capital schemes. This is a preferable alternative to traditional tender, proven to deliver quality schemes on time and on budget.

•    NHS East Riding of Yorkshire has agreed an ‘Option to Purchase’ with the current owners of the proposed hospital site, Beverley Consolidated Charity. This means that a deposit has been paid and there is an agreed period to complete the deal to buy the site. During the period no-one else can buy the site.
