East Riding of Yorkshire Council is holding a new course and it is being run by Brian Bate, community sports coach. Brian has been making walking sticks and shepherds’ crooks in Leicestershire for many years and has now moved to the East Riding and is offering to teach this amazing craft to the residents of the area.
Join Brian for a rare insight into this fascinating craft. Make your own crook or stick from traditional materials. Handles can be made from antler or a selection of hard woods and the shanks will be made from hazel or blackthorn. Participants will be taught techniques such as carving the handles, shank straightening and jointing methods. All tools and materials supplied.
The courses will take place at Longcroft School in Beverley on 19 September and 14 November and will cost £50 per person. Participants will need a packed lunch and early booking is essential.
