An error has been made in the collection of the August instalment of council tax and business rates from residents who pay on the 15th of the month by direct debit.
It does not affect anyone whose payment falls on any other date in the month.
The 15th August fell on a Saturday. Where the payment day falls at the weekend, or on a Bank Holiday, the Council’s normal practice is to collect the instalment on the next working day.
However, due to an error, payment was collected on Friday 14th August rather than on Monday 17th August.
The council is working with its partner arvato to remedy the situation as a matter of urgency.
At this stage it is not known how many of the people have been adversely affected but steps are in place to help those who have been.
Individual letters are now in the post to all those affected to alert them, providing them with telephone contact details and assuring them that any resulting bank charges will be reimbursed.
All remaining dates in the calendar year for processing and collection of council tax have been checked and found to be correct.
We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused and are now focusing on remedying the situation.
