More than 1,300 students will receive their individual AS and A2 examination results on Thursday, 20th August 2008. Students will be hoping to achieve the results they need to move into the next phase of their education. Many will be dependent on achieving good results to take up a university place. East Riding secondary schools have been working hard with their students to ensure that they do well and achieve their goals.
Secondary schools in the East Riding of Yorkshire will be working hard over the next few days to provide support and guidance to students following the publication of the ‘A’ level results.
In the East Riding of Yorkshire, 17 schools teach ‘A’ level courses and the council will be looking at the trend in A level results to see what progress has been made to improve the performance of schools. Until 2008, the performance at “A” level has not matched the excellent results in the GCSE examination and we will be looking to see that the progress made last year has been sustained. The school results are presented as an ‘average point score’ per student which, in the East Riding, has risen from 700 in 2007 to 739 in 2008. The improvement from year to year is the equivalent of one “A” level grade better per pupil.
Mike Furbank, head of improvement and learning, (Children and Young People’s Services) for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“It is our ambition that all students are able to reach their potential and leave school fully equipped to enter the world of work or go on to take up opportunities in higher education.
“I would like to celebrate the hard work that lies behind these results, both of students and staff, and offer my congratulations to students who have done well. It is important that we continue to make improvements in our external examination results, not only for the benefit of young people, but also as part of our wider aspiration to raise the level of better qualified people living and working in the East Riding.”
