Beverley RL Vs Fenners

The blue and golds finally overcame the stubborn resistance of a spirited Fenners outfit last Saturday at the Beverley Leisure Centre. They monopolised possession and territory in the first half but struggled to turn the pressure into points. The hosts opened the scoring with an astute pass from Neil Gay which sent Craig Hancock sprinting away to side-step the full back and score for Louis Hubbard to convert. The lead nearly increased when Craig Hancock and Steve Davidson combined to sent Craig Hamlet away but he was unlucky to be forced into touch at the last minute. Mike Cooper was also unlucky to be ankle tapped a yard short of the line following an incisive 40 yard break.

The pressure finally paid off when after several repeat sets in the Fenners 20 metre zone, Mike Cooper forced his way over for Hubbard to convert. The hosts seemed to be coasting to victory but against the run of play the visitors added tries shortly before and after half time to draw level at 12-12.  Jason Rankin steadied the home sides nerves when pouncing on a loose ball to score after Mike Cooper had the ball stripped from his grasp. Beverley started to turn the screw and a good initial break by Neil Gay and a neat inside pass sent Tony Spence sprinting away to round the full back and score his fifth try in 3 appearances for the blue and golds. Louis Hubbard who along with his second row colleague Jon Kershaw got through a tremendous amount of work forced his way over to convert his own try an put the game beyond the reach of the visitors.

It was finally left for Mike Brown to put the icing on the cake and score a real prop forwards try from close rang despite the attentions of at least 3 Fenners defenders.  The man of the match award went to Craig Hancock who appeared to almost cover every blade of grass on the field with Gavin Proctor impressing in his return from injury a close second. There are no fixtures in the Hull & District League next week due to the Super League Grand Final
