The Annual Beverley Lions Bonfire is a very successful and well-attended event, however with this comes a number of Traffic and Public Safety issues, which have been monitored and discussed with The Beverley Police, The Beverley Lions and the Highways Authority.
In 2008 a trial was carried whereby the east bound carriageway of Westwood Road and Walkington Road was temporary closed to traffic. This closure proved successful, but safety issues still remain along the B1230, therefore the closures are to be extended to include the B1230 as
follows:
1 East bound carriageway of the B1230 from the junction with the Walkington traffic lights to the junction with Cartwright Lane and Queensgate.
2 Eastbound carriageway of Walkington Road and Westwood Road from the junction with Keldgate Road to the junction with Albert Terrace
A diversion will be implemented to take traffic requiring access into Beverley via the Killingwoldgraves Roundabout. Limited parking around Westwood will be available as follows:
1 Walkington Road between Westwood Road and the junction with Keldgate Road
2 Keldgate Road between Cartwright Lane and the junction with Walkington Road
Both these areas can only be accessed from the Beverley Town Centre End.
The closure will be effective between 1800 – 2100 hrs on 5 November, which together with the reduced parking around the Westwood prevent vehicle and pedestrian conflict and allow a safer dispersal to take place once the event has finished.
