In a press release sent out today by East Riding of Yorkshire Council to close Saturday Market this weekend has deeply upset and angered Beverley’s Market Traders, the press release issued reads;
The East Yorkshire Council has regretfully had to cancel the Saturday market in Beverley town centre tomorrow, 9 January, because of the adverse weather conditions. The conditions would not be safe for those setting up the stalls and members of the public. All stall holders are being notified today.
The council apologises for the inconvenience to local people and others who use the market.
John Dyson Sectary of Beverley Market Traders told HU17.net ‘This is the first time I have known Beverley Market to be cancelled in 40 years, there has been plenty of time to prepare Saturday Market.’
John Dyson who found out that the Saturday Market was being closed on the radio went onto say Malcolm Patterson Chairman of the Beverley Market Traders only found out about Saturday Market being cancelled after I called him.’
Mr Pattison too is very angry with the closure, he has like other food retailers on the market purchased stock, three lorries worth of fresh fruit and vegetables which he will may now be unable to sell.
Saturday Market is said to the be the Jewell in the Beverley’s Crown attracting regular visitors to the town as well as a locals, John Dyson certainly has a point, it seems very defeatist to close the market due to some slightly indifferent conditions.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council may be able to use Health & Safety as an excuse though will they be prepared to compensate the traders for their losses as stall holders will still be expected to pay for stock and staff.
John Dyson has still had no direct contact with East Riding of Yorkshire Council though has vowed to find out who was responsible for making the decision to close Beverley’s Market this week.
