Neil McGowan, from HMP Everthorpe, will be presenting Shane Thurlow (Beverley Extended Schools Coordinator) with several mountain bikes for the project, which have been stolen and recovered, but not claimed by their owners.
The inmates at the prison, under the supervision of staff, have worked on the bikes to ensure they are road worthy and in full working order. In return, they gain a recognised qualification for undertaking this work.
The bikes are then donated to charitable and community causes – and students in Beverley have been lucky enough to benefit from this.
Through partnership working with Humberside Police, the prison and the LEA, the Extended Schools Team has secured a number of these bikes for use by the Longcroft School Physical Education Department.
They will also be a valuable resource for local Sport Development projects, especially regarding students who do not have access to a mountain bike, but would like to take part in cycling opportunities and learn how to be responsible cyclists.
