We were contacted earlier in the week by a local businessman who runs a shop on Toll Gavel in Beverley. He is becoming increasingly concerned with the number cars, vans and Lorries that drive onto the Toll Gavel pedestrian zone.
His concerns were only confirmed in the 5 minutes spent talking to him outside his shop. In that short amount of time two vans and one very large lorry pulled onto Toll Gavel and proceeded to drive to the shops on the Toll Gavel they had deliveries for.
He told us; “This happens every day, on Saturday you even get people who drive all the way through to Wednesday Market. It is just a matter of time before some one is hurt or seriously injured.”
While there one van which was parked by the Outdoor Centre reversed forcing both of us to get out of the way in a hurry, then a lorry pulled onto the Toll Gavel, a small dog which was tied up outside shop had to move out the way of the wheels of the truck.
It seems there is not enough in place to stop motorists and delivery drivers, quite often while walking through the centre of town vehicles will drive on the ‘pedestrian zones’ forcing shoppers to move aside to allow them through rarely are they challenged about why they are driving in a part of town that is designated as a pedestrian area.
