Weighton went into the opening game sitting top of the table with a 2 point cushion, but failed to maintain their impressive new year form, after being held to a 0-0 draw by Real Soldierdad. The result was disappointing for both sides, with Soldierdad looking to move into second spot at the start of the night.
Apologies to Weighton for missing off their write up last week – By all accounts they cruised the game against Borussia Teeth, with transformed defensive hard-man Martin Moss popping up at the other end, to make it 5 goals in 3 games…this is after playing two full seasons without getting anywhere near the other half of the pitch, let along getting a shot off. When asked about his goal scoring prowess, the Boss said “Someone has to teach these young lads how to do it!”; fair play Martin
Another tough encounter saw AJ’s and Borussia teeth play out another scoreless draw. Both teams had a couple of half chances, but neither really looked like scoring. At least Borussia now have their first point on the board, and can begin thinking about putting pressure on the Black Sox, who they play in the final game of the season. The game also saw the introduction of new referee Jack Grieve. At 16 he is only a young lad, but he handled both his games well, and should grow in confidence with a few more matches under his belt.
The final game of the opening fixtures saw a good battle between 2nd place Waterside and 4th place Trogs. Neither team was giving an inch in what was a hard fought battle. Referee Uzzell didn’t help by giving a throw-in to Waterside, the forgetting who he had awarded it to and changing his mind, much to the dismay of the Waterside boys! They did have a laugh about it afterwards, but this was largely due to their buoyant mood after seeing second top scorer, Brad Palin, lob the keeper to score the only goal of the game, and take Waterside joint top. The result was another blow for Trogs, who are now places 6th, behind both Real Soldierdad and ONE10! Kev will not be happy!!!
Deportivo could not capitalise on their victory over Waterside last week, as they only managed a 0-0 draw with the Black Sox. Depo did have the majority of the play, and Mike Helyard almost broke the crossbar twice, with thunderous efforts from just outside the area, but ultimately the creative brilliance of Paul Lockwood was the missing factor – £5 please Locky
ONE10 showed their intent on be named top Army side come the end of the season, as the swept aside Not Very Athletic 3-0, with half of their team missing to boot! Their were a couple of tasty encounters, some great passing, and good finishing, and ONE10 look to be getting better week by week. Next up for ONE10 if the Black Sox, in what is my favourite game of the season. This is a must win for both sides and should be a… erm…
classic!
The final game some form boys BarceHullona v Angel, who have been on a good run themselves since Xmas. This game produced the biggest surprise of the season, with Barce player Chris Wilson hitting the back of the net… and not his own net! All I can surmise is that he tried to play a pass forward, miss hit it, fooled the keeper, who must have slipped on the wet astro, and the ball rolled into the corner – there can be no other explanation!
Two further goals from Andy Martin and the ever dependable Danny Piwinski saw Barce move up to 5th place; their highest ever position!
