Beverley based hypnotist, Sheila Granger is appealing for volunteers aged 8-12 to take part in a clinical trial which could help them lose weight and build up their confidence.
Having conducted a trial last year for the ‘Virtual Gastric Band (VGB)’ with twenty-one adults of varying age and size and achieving a 95% success rate, Sheila would now like to prove that a similar success can be achieved with obese children.
Sheila explains:
“The childhood obesity does not incorporate the VGB, it actually works differently. Rather than putting them into a deep trance I use a method of storytelling which requires the child to use their imagination and that enables them to relax.
Children who are overweight might suffer at the hands of their peers, be unable to enjoy physical activity to the full and possibly have low self-esteem – within the hypnosis I will build up their confidence.”
Sheila has worked with many children, most recently helping a 12 year old overcome a tremendous fear of dogs. Now she would like to bring all of her experiences together and help children to lose weight.
Sheila adds: “I would like to work with five children aged between 8-12 who themselves want to lose weight and have the full support of their parents. Four weekly sessions will be tailored to each individual child so that I can treat the key issues.”
Obesity is a major issue, causing heart disease, diabetes and many other serious illnesses costing the UK economy £3.5Billion a year.
The ultimate goal for Sheila is for the NHS to recognise hypnotherapy as a viable treatment available via GP’s for a huge variety of conditions and ailments.
