The Judges Tower at Beverley Racecourse has without question the best view of the of the finishing line, and it needs to as this is where all the information is gathered for those too close to call photo finishes.
Racetech engineer John Stephens who operated the photo finish equipment yesterday showed just how sensitive the camera was to movement. A slight vibration was enough to cause distortion to the picture that would cause lots of problems in picking the winner.
The camera its self takes a picture that is just one pixel wide, from this image judges in the tower are able to determine the outcome of those close race finishes. The image is they viewed as large image showing up which horse crossing the winning line first.
