German Street Named after Beverley

Lemgo

Beverley’s long and enthusiastic relationship with twin-town Lemgo is set to be permanently commemorated by the German town’s authorities.

Officials in Lemgo – the oldest and most beautiful town in the Lippe region of North Rhine-Westphalia – have announced they will name a street after Beverley in their next building project, to mark 30 years of twinning between the towns.

Links between the two towns are very strong, with groups regularly arranging exchange trips for students and visits for residents. Last year, Beverley hosted a group from the Lemgo Fire Service.

Mayor of Beverley councillor David Elvidge is delighted with Lemgo’s decision.

He said: “I am proud to say that Beverley’s friendship with Lemgo in Germany has been recognised in this way. This commemorates our thirty years of twinning and cultural exchange  from 1979 – 2009.

“Long may it continue.”

With a current population of 42,000, Lemgo was founded in the 12th century at the crossroads of two major trading routes and was a member of the Hanseatic League, a medieval trading association of free cities in several northern European countries.
