East Riding College’s Inspire Hair and Beauty salons have won an industry award for health, safety and cleanliness for the fourth year in a row.

The salons, at the College’s campuses in Bridlington and Beverley, have been accredited by the Hair and Beauty Industry Authority (HABIA) and East Riding of Yorkshire Council following unannounced spot checks by health and safety inspectors.

The nationally recognised award is given to clean salons which carry out specified safe and hygienic practices necessary to ensure employee and customer safety.

The College was among a number of salons receiving HABIA awards at a ceremony at Willerby Manor where students also demonstrated hot stones massage to an audience of hair and beauty professionals.

Natalee Eddom Said:

“I’m delighted we have earned a HABIA award for the fourth year in a row and would like to thank students and staff for all their hard work in achieving it.

“It is essential that the salon professionals of the future begin their careers following the right practices to ensure their working environment is safe and clean.

“The award also assures our clients, who are attended to by students at our Bridlington and Beverley campuses, that we have the very highest standards in salon hygiene.”

The College has working hair and beauty salons at its campuses in Gallows Lane, Beverley, and St Mary’s Walk, Bridlington. Both are open to the public and operate like any other business, although rates are discounted in recognition of the students’ experience. Students carry out all the established and recently developed treatments and are supervised by tutors.

Chris Dunnachie, senior health and safety inspector at the Council, said:

“East Riding College has gained the award for the fourth year running and has helped to provide a solid foundation to a new college and training provider HABIA award to be launched this year.

“Students accepting and adopting safe working practices during their training can only deliver improved future workplace safety.”
