Walkington Hayride 2010

Walkington’s Hayride is alive and well as organisers prepare for their annual garden party on Saturday.

Traditionally one of three big events of the Walkington Hayride, now just the garden party remains.

But such is the tradition of the event and with Walkington still enjoying a strong community spirit, it is hoped many people will enjoy the garden party while raising money for Dove House Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Support and Beverley Community Lift.

Gwen Rodmell, chairman of the Garden Party Committee, told HU17.net:

“Our entertainment will come from Beverley Brass Band, Byass Steam Organ and there will be a children’s entertainer called Mad Man Magic.

“Traditionally, the Hayride is about dressing up in Victorian style and stall holders will be doing this at the garden party.

“There’ll be a grand raffle, childrens games and stalls selling produce and wonderful cream teas.”

The event is at 40 Little Weighton Road, from 2pm-4.30pm. Entry is £1 for adults 50p for children.

On Sunday there’ll be an inter-village six-a-side cricket tournament at the playing fields.

The Hayride weekend, which started in 1967, has included the Barn Dance and the Hayride itself. But a lack of working horses to pull the carts, wagons and drays meant the Hayride tradition ended in 2007. The Barn Dance is, as Gwen says, “a casualty of the World Cup”.
