Beverley’s Armed Forces Day chairman councillor David Elvidge says his common ground with the Conservative Party is the main reason behind his decision to switch parties.
Councillor Elvidge, who is busy preparing for next week’s big day in the town, had previously been part of the Labour party.
But the former Beverley mayor, who has been considering a switch for some time, says the time was right for a change.
He said: “In the last three years I have done my best to work towards improving a lot of my fellow residents in Beverley and at the same time promote the Town I grew up in as a town councillor, then as deputy and then to be honoured to hold the office of mayor.
“During that time I have worked with various groups, including councillors from all political and non-political parties.
“It has now become obvious to me because of that, I have more in common with one group than any other in my desire and drive to work for the residents of Beverley and that is why I have decided to join the Conservative party.
“I hope to continue to work as I have and would always work under the banner ‘It’s all about Beverley’.”
Councillor Elvidge, the driving force behind Armed Forces Day and the Heroes Welcome campaign, has also announced more details of next Sunday’s event.
BBC Radio Humberside’s Caroline Davis will broadcast live from the town from 10am to 12pm, while evening show host James Hogarth will compare the stage show.
