Four Australian tourists were given the VIP treatment in Beverley today as part of their visit to their ‘twin’ town.
Bruce and Chris Mann and Lorna and Rich Barrett-Leonard are on a month-long tour of the UK.
And being from the small farming community of Beverley in Western Australia, they just had to stop off in the town as part of their tour.
They were introduced to the Mayor of Beverley Bessie Foot and given a special tour round the Beverley Guildhall.
Councillor Foot presented them with a memento of the town, while they handed over postcards of their own town.
The Australians were present at yesterday’s Town Trail launch, and admitted they were overwhelmed with the history and architecture of Beverley, and the warm welcome they have received.
Chris, 58, told HU17.net: “We made sure that while we were over here we had to come to Beverley.
“We’ve talked to so many different people and have had a wonderful time here.”
Her husband Bruce, 60, said: “Compared to our little town this place is huge. There are so many old buildings and it is amazing to think that they were here 3-400 years before our town was even built.
“The Beverley Minster in particular is beautiful – it just oozes history. We think anything over 150 years old is old back home.”
Beverley WA is a small farming community 130 kilometres from Perth and is one of Western Australia’s oldest towns.
Bruce and Rich are themselves farmers and have ancestors from Beverley, while Chris and Lorna are teachers who have taken extended leave for their once-in-a-lifetime trip to the UK.
Rich was sporting a Beverley Town polo shirt – Aussie rules, rather than football – and both couples say they’ll be at the WACA to watch England take on Australia as part of their Ashes tour.
