Such was the success of the inaugural Art and The Farm Open Day in April, that artists and craftsmen at Calf House Studios are repeating the experience this weekend.
All six of Bishop Burton’s Calf House Studio’s resident craftsmen will be re-opening their stable doors and inviting visitors to see them at work during the second Art and the Farm event on 18th July.
Based on a working farm that enjoys unspoilt views of Beverley and the Yorkshire Wolds, Calf House Studios is a nest of inspirational studios that is home to East Yorkshire artists and craftspeople including sculptor, Peter Brown, tutor and jewellery maker Tracey Spurgin, stamp designer Lynnda Worsnop, photographer John Denton and artists and tutors Graham Chambers and Janet Pelling.
Calf House Studios owner Heather Hayward explained why she decided to repeat the event; “We were absolutely inundated with visitors at the last Open Day and as my vision for Calf House Studios is to make art fun and accessible to all, the more people who can visit the team at work, the better for promoting art, the artists and the East Riding. Due to the artists’ teaching commitments around the UK, the chances to see them all together are limited, so I urge people to make the most of this opportunity.”
Stamp designer Lynnda Worsnop added; “We will be hoping to show visitors that everyone can be creative in this idyllic location by offering a free prize draw that gives people the chance to win a workshop or some studio time with the artist of their choice.”
Photographer John Denton will also be running two free ‘how to use your camera’ sessions around the farm and is encouraging visitors to bring their cameras along.
Jewellery maker Tracey Spurgin’s reputation as a leading tutor and jewellery maker has spiralled since she moved to Calf House Studios and she now hosts masterclasses at her studio with internationally renowned experts in the silver clay jewellery making field. Of the Open Day, she said; “It’s a great way to show people that art can be immense fun and that you don’t need to be a creative genius to make a nice piece of jewellery, take a winning photo or create amazing things with stamps using Lynnda’s designs.”
Art and the Farm takes place at Cold Harbour Farm in Bishop Burton between 10am and 4pm on 18th July and entrance is free. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy direct from the artist and learn about the growing number of workshops that take place at the studios all year round. There will also be a self guided farm walk and refreshments will be served, with proceeds benefiting Bishop Burton church. Dogs are welcome on the farm walk.
Calf House Studios is based at LEAF (Linking Environment and Farming) demonstration farm, Cold Harbour Farm and comprises six studios for resident artists, a studio space for visiting artists and students plus seminar and exhibition areas for workshops and open days. It is also adjacent to the Farm’s Foreman’s House that offers tranquil four bedroom accommodation for holiday lets.
