‘Sobriety’ Returning to Beverley for First Time in 40 Years

An old girl will be returning home as part of a special visit thanks to Lottery money.

The Sobriety was originally built in Beverley 100 years ago back in 1910 at Joseph Scarrs.

To mark its centenary the Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant so the Waterways Museum can take her back to town where she was built.

It is over forty years since the Sobriety has been seen in Beverley. Back in 1973 she was purchased by the museum and fully restored and made a brief appearance a few years later.

The Keel is now used as a pleasure cruiser and will be manned by young volunteers from Goole High School on the trip between Goole, Beverley and Hull.

Rachel Walker said:

“It is quite exciting to be taking her back home; we hope the people of the town will take the chance to look around her.”

“We will be arriving in Beverley at 18:47 on Monday 9th August, and leaving again at 15:30 on Tuesday 10th to make our way to Hull.”

“While we are there we will be open for the public to look around on the Tuesday between 1000 and 1500.”

Admission is FREE; the Sobriety will be located at Beverley Beck, near the Syntan Barge which is maintained by the Beverley Barge Preservation Society.
