Beverley Town CC 2nd XI Vs Malton & Old Malton

Beverley 2nd XI drew with Malton & Old Malton

Division 2 title challengers Malton & Old Malton were the visitors to Norwood and a tight game left the 2nd XI with 26 points from a draw. An opening stand of 57 between Tim Smith (51) and Pete Hynes (19) gave Beverley a good start. When Smith was out with the total on 101 Tony Spence took command and made an excellent 69 before falling at 163 for 5. Captain Graeme Taylor made 24 as Town reached 195 for 8.

Nick Robinson and Brad Dobson opened the bowling and both bowled with pace. It was the former who claimed the first three wickets to fall before Jon Lewis (1-26) chipped in to leave the visitors at 90 for 4. Further wickets fell to the returning Dobson (1-39), Robinson and to slow bowler Iain Sugdon (1-38) as Malton got closer to their target. Robinson, however, snapped up the eighth wicket to fall to register a well deserved first five-wicket haul (5-69) for the 2nd XI and the visitors played out their overs for the draw at 182 for 8.

This was almost a full strength 2nd XI and, although they would probably have liked another 20 or 30 runs on a good batting surface, they played much more to their potential and performed well in getting the better of a side near the top of the league.
