Amateur Jockey Jacob Butterfield Racing Debut @ Beverley

The Glorious Twelfth is usually used to refer to 12th August, the start of the  shooting season.

But, to the proud family of amateur Jockey Jacob Butterfield, it will always be the day they attended Beverley  race course to see the 17 year old make his debut in the Chris Hoggard Memorial Handicap. A wonderful day and  the start of a wonderful career, it is hoped.

However, it almost did not happen as, whilst he was riding towards the stalls, Jacobs’s horse, “Vertigo on Course” took a tumble throwing him off before the race began.

His family and friends watched in shock and disappointment for several minutes as he composed himself and remounted, a true professional already!.   Following a quick glance by the course vet, the horse was given the all clear to take part in the race. The brave horse and new jockey were off!!.

Jacob went on to come 5th out of 13 in the race, very creditable and not far from the glorious first next time.

Not many young men can say they started out at the best racecourse and in the most beautiful location – Beverley.
