Swimmers at East Riding Leisure Centres raised more than £10,000 for charity when they took part in Swimathon 2010.
The total figure raised by 136 swimmers at five East Riding pools has now been calculated at £10,338.74
Money raised by those taking part in the East Riding forms part of £2m raised across the UK which goes to the Swimathon Foundation and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
Councillor Jane Evison, portfolio holder for cultural services, housing and public protection at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:
“It is fantastic that so many people took to the water at East Riding swimming pools to raise money for good causes during Swimathon 2010.
“The council was delighted to have five pools taking part in the event, which grows in popularity every year. I hope that all those taking part enjoyed the event and continue to get plenty of use out of the first-class sport facilities offered in the East Riding.
They should feel proud of themselves for the money they have raised.”
Within the East Riding Beverley topped the local league table after 51 swimmers managed to raise £5,171. At Haltemprice Leisure Centre 29 swimmers raised £2,161 and at Driffield 16 raised £1,183.
The event at the Pavilion Leisure Centre in Withernsea saw 14 swimmers raise £971 while at Leisure World in Bridlington 26 swimmers raised £854.
Nationally more than 500 pools took part in the event in April, which saw the best turn out since 2004 as more than 20,000 people of all ages and abilities took part, swimming more than 2m lengths.
Olympic gold medallist and Swimathon president, Duncan Goodhew said: “Swimathon is a fantastic event, not only are we raising millions for Marie Curie Cancer Care, we are also encouraging people up and down the country to have their own Olympic moment and swim further and more often than ever before.”
The fundraising will help support Marie Curie Cancer Care nurses who provide nursing care to people with cancer and other terminal illnesses, at the end of their lives, in a place of their choice, completely free.
