This Bank Holiday Monday (August 30th) brings a rare chance to climb to the top of the great clock tower of Beverley Minster.
The 165 foot high structure was opened to the public in 2009 for the first time in 30 years and over 400 people climbed 212 steps to the roof to enjoy sweeping views towards the Humber, Yorkshire Wolds and coast.
This will be the only opportunity this year to experience the climb and currently there are no plans to repeat the exercise in 2011. Beware, however, this is not a climb for the faint-hearted or unfit – the virgers reserve the right to refuse access to anyone they consider may be unable to complete it.
The tours cost £10 per person, including a visit to the clock mechanism and start at 10am, then every 40 minutes afterwards throughout the day. To reserve a space telephone 01482 868540.
For the less athletic and as a back up in case of bad weather, the virgers at Beverley Minster are also offering a full day of tours inside the roof and the Central Tower.
These will include a demonstration of the increasingly famous treadwheel crane that will be featured in the Antiques Roadshow and Songs of Praise episodes to be broadcast on October 10th on BBC1.
These tours are suitable for almost everyone and cost £5 per adult, £2.50 for under 16s. The first tour is at 10am and then hourly from 11.15am to 4.15pm.
Refreshments will also be available throughout the day.
