The Guitar Whisperer

Richard Durrant will be appearing at the Toll Gavel United Church, Beverley on Thursday 14 October 2010 at 7.30pm.

He’s no stranger to delivering enchanting guitar performances that leave the hairs on the back of one’s neck standing up. Recent performances of the “Guitar Whisperer” have taken him to all corners of England where his rapidly growing audiences have enjoyed a guitar show like no other.

In the constantly evolving, sons et lumiere event which is “The Guitar Whisperer” Richard begins with a suite of pieces by the Paraguayan composer and guitarist Agustin Barrios followed by works by Ponce and Villa-Lobos.

From the safety of this vivid music, and with the audience’s trust assured, The Guitar Whisperer takes a journey into an astounding, sensory world. Recording and looping the refrains live, Richard performs Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells on ukulele, bodhran, banjo, and guitar, creating an elevating soundscape set to stunningly beautiful visuals including footage of the Apollo moon landings.

Without interruption he then deftly slips into a beautiful version of Debussy’s Arabesque No.1 accompanied by an impressionistic, animated film by artist Miranda Vincent. The show continues with Manuel de Falla’s La Vide Breve which Richard performs as a duet with himself – the second Richard emanating from the soundtrack of another specially commissioned, new film by Miranda.

The climax of the show is totally acoustic and classical – shockingly direct and affecting after the intensity of what has come before.

Tickets are available from Beverley Tourist Information Centre and cost Adults £12, Concessions £10
