A cavalcade of painstakingly restored ‘Moggie Thousands’ set off from Beverley this weekend for the second running of the The Bay Classic, a unique Bar-to-Bar rally.
The event was staged for the first time last year when almost 30 Morris Minors, some dating back almost to the Second World War, plus a handful of other classic vehicles, made the 25-mile journey from the 600-year-old North Bar at Beverley to its recently-built full-size replica at The Bay, Filey.
The Bay, the UK’s premier coastal holiday village, is being developed on a 150-acre site three miles south of Filey by Essential Vivendi at a total cost of around £120m. The replica North Bar has become the village’s central landmark and was built at the request of the company’s directors, Wayne Low and Laurence Corrigan, as a tribute to Beverley, where they have strong family and business ties.
This year’s Bay Classic, organised in conjunction with the Bridlington and Wolds branch of the Morris Minors Owners Club, took place on Sunday 5 September. The vehicles gathered in Saturday Market, Beverley just before 10am and set off in convoy at 10.30am.
Sue Akrill, chair of the BWMMOC, said: “We didn’t know what to expect last year but the event proved so popular our members have been looking forward to a repeat run ever since. Some of the cars have driven up from South Yorkshire and even the Midlands. ”
Co-organiser of the event, Mike Stathers, from The PR Company at Hessle, said it was Essential Vivendi’s intention to make the rally an annual event. He added: “The Bay Classic promises to become a real tourism attraction for Beverley and Filey, creating new links between the two popular towns.
The Deputy Mayor of Beverley, Simon Pickering, waved the flag to signal the start of the rally.
