Once again, Skidby Windmill will be taking part in the popular annual Heritage Open Days event.
The mill will be offering free admission to everybody (not just the under fives) on Saturday, 11th and Sunday, 12th September only – the HODS event nationally runs from 9 – 12 September, but not all venues take part for the full four days.
Heritage Open Days – the annual celebration of Britain’s architecture, history and culture – is the country’s largest free community event. It offers people the chance to enter free of charge properties not normally open to the public or which, like Skidby Windmill, would normally charge an admission fee. The event is supported by English Heritage.
At Skidby Windmill, visitors will not only be able to look around the historic windmill and the Museum of East Riding Rural Life, but will also be able to visit the stone floor and chat to our extremely enthusiastic miller, Neil Johnson, about his work at Skidby and the work that goes into producing that bag of flour! The flour produced at Skidby – which is premium wholemeal flour suitable for both breadmaking and ordinary baking – can be purchased from the museum shop. Please note that, as this is a wind mill (we do not have electric power!), the sails will only be turning if the weather conditions are appropriate; we cannot operate the mill with either high, gusty winds or flat calm.
Skidby Windmill will be open free for Heritage Open Days weekend (11-12 September) from 10am to 5pm (last admission is 4.15pm).
SKIDBY WINDMILL AGAIN GAINS VAQAS AWARD
Skidby Windmill and Museum of East Riding Rural Life was visited last month by a ‘mystery shopper’, who assessed the site as part of the Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme (VAQAS) run by Enjoy England.
For the third year running, the mill was described as fully meriting the award of Vist England’s accreditation of ‘Qualitiy Assured Visitor Attraction’ and it was stated that the site offered the visitor a very good quality experience for both the quality of the indoor displays and the outdoor play equipment in the field, while the warmth of the welcome to the mill from staff and the enthusiasm and skill of the miller himself were described as ‘excellent’.
