Following a serious assault in Beverley on 20 August police are urging local residents who may have any information to come forward.
As a 68-year-old man was walking along a cut through, near Rosemary Walk, off Woodhall Way in Beverley at 2200hrs on Friday 20 August he heard footsteps from behind him he turned around and saw three men.
He was verbally and physically assaulted and money was demanded from him.
As the 68-year-old man shouted for help the three men ran off towards the grassed area at the top of Copandale Road.
The 68-year-old man received swelling, reddening and pain to left side of his face, pain to his ribs and bruising to the left hand side of his body.
A wallet containing cash was stolen during the assault.
All three of the suspects had their faces covered. They are described as white men, of a medium build, aged in their late teens to early 20’s.
Police immediately conducted an area search as paramedics attended to the victim.
The victim who wishes to remain anonymous said:
“I was coming home from meeting friends in Beverley, on the way home I decided to go to the cash machine, the machine was not working so I carried on home.
“A few minutes later, I went down a cut through to get home and was met by three lads. They repeatedly punched me in the face and body, before taking my wallet, leaving me injured and in pain for several days.
Detective Inspector Tony Cockerill from Beverley CID said:
“This appears to be a nasty and unprovoked attacked against a man in his late 60’s whilst walking alone.
“The cut through where the assault took place is in a built up residential area of Beverley and I personally believe people locally know who is responsible for this assault.
“Two men were arrested shortly after the offence, and are still on police bail. I need members of the public who either witnessed the assault or have any information which may assist the police to come forward.
“Thankfully this type of incident is rare in Beverley, however it is always worth bearing in mind, as adults we are keen to teach children the dangers of walking alone, however as we grow older, we forget the sad fact, this type of incident do occur and it is vital we are all streetwise. If you have to walk alone, stay alert. Be conscious of your surroundings, especially at night. If possible stick to well lit and populated areas and avoid shortcuts through secluded areas. Choose ATMs located in well lit areas and free of shrubbery or decorative dividers, if possible.”
