The blue and golds will consider this one a point lost rather than a point gained from this trip to Hull University. They attempted to play adventurously in blustery conditions which resulted in some spectacular tries but at times they made one pass too many when a more direct style of play was required. On a day when many players were having an off day the man of the match was full back Lee Falcus whose clearing runs and try saving tackles were invaluable in a game that could have gone either way.
In an end to end game Tony Spence returning from his cricketing commitments went over after only two minutes to score the first of his three tries the second of which was a spectacular 50 metre effort and he latched onto one of Steve Jonson’s well timed passes to complete his hattrick. Jonson added a try himself when latching onto a neat inside pass from Aaron Clark. The hosts added four tries themselves but could only convert one as goalkicking was extremely difficult in the windy conditions. The whistle blew for the interval with Beverley 20-18 to the good.
The second half continued in similar fashion with home side taking the lead with a converted try before Mike Brown replied with a try which Steve Jonson obliged with the extras to put the visitors back in front. The hosts again took the lead going into the final quarter of the game with a try and looked capable of killing the game off with further tries but some desperate last ditch defence kept them out. However finally with the minutes ticking away a smart blind side move involving Steve Jonson and Craig Hamlet saw Steve Davidson break down the left wing, kick ahead and show remarkable pace for a big man to win the race to touch down in the corner. Steve Jonsons conversion attempt looked to be going over but the wind caught it at the last minute ensuring the blue and golds had to settle for a draw.
There are no Hull & District League fixtures this weekend due to the Super League Grand Final. Meanwhile Beverley have been handed a tough draw in the second round of the BARLA Yorkshire Cup. They will travel to Leeds to play Queens on October 9th. The two sides previously met in the late 1990’s when Beverley where playing their rugby in the National Confrerence.
