This was a sickening defeat for the blue and golds as they paraded their new strip. The visitors snatched victory with a try in the corner in the final seconds of the game to spoil the party. The hosts twice surrendered a ten point lead, in a game that they appeared to have the measure of their opponents in attack but let themselves down in defence at times. The game started well for Beverley with Pete Newton going over for a try after only five minutes. Shortly after crisp handling saw Steve Johnson and Tony Spence combine to send John Nolan over in the corner to extend the lead.
The visitors clawed their way back to level the scores at 10-10 with two tries in the left hand corner as they exploited some sketchy tackling out wide. Beverley did almost regain the lead just before the interval when Guy Adams went over only to be pulled back for a forward pass- a decision that seemed a little harsh.
The home side piled on the pressure early in the second half and Lee Falcus went over beneath the posts courtesy of a well rehearsed training ground move which saw Steve Johnson’s inside pass feed Mike Brown who in turn fed Falcus. Beverley fumbled the restart kick and had to put in a stern defensive effort to keep the visitors out. Having weathered the storm, Beverley got down the other end of the field and Steve Johnson was again influential in sending John Nolan over in the corner for his second try. They had the chance to kill the game off when a rampaging run from Guy Adams saw an his inside pass go to ground with an open line.
The afternoon turned sour for the blue and golds in the final ten minutes as Lambwath grabbed three tries to clinch what seemed an unlikely victory. The man of the match was deservedly Aaron Horsfield who was constantly in the thick of the action in both defence and in taking the ball up in attack.
This Saturday sees the blue and golds take a break from league action as they travel to the Roy Waudby complex (Hilltop) to take on Cottingham Tigers in the first round of the Tom Beautiman Cup. Kick off is 2pm.
