East Riding residents took less waste to the 10 household waste and recycling sites over the summer months compared with the same months last year.
For East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Symon Fraser, portfolio holder for environment and planning, said: “This is excellent news because the cheapest waste to get rid of is the waste we don’t make.
“It saves the council and our taxpayers the cost of dealing with it and is better for the environment.”
The amount of waste sent to landfill from the sites dropped to 6,700 tonnes, down from 7,800 tonnes for the same months last year. Across all the sites, the combined recycling figure for the months from April to September was 78 per cent. This means that 78 per cent of all the waste taken to the sites was recycled and composted.
Outstanding results include:
- The tonnage sent for landfill from Weel HWRS, Beverley, was 757 tonnes compared with 1,340 tonnes in summer of last year
- The total amount of waste local residents took to Airmyn HWRS was 5.500 tonnes, compared with 6,200 tonnes for the same period last year.
- Driffield HWRS achieved a recycling rate of 79 per cent (77 per cent for last summer) with 584 tonnes sent to landfill, down from 631 tonnes last summer.
The sites are at Carnaby, Bridlington; Weel, Beverley; Kelleythorpe, Driffield; Airmyn, Goole; Humberfield; Hessle; Hornsea; Market Weighton; Pockington; Preston; and Withernsea.
The sites take an increasingly wide range of recyclable materials, including:
Batteries (both car and household)
Books, cans,cardboard,CD/DVDs, glass, garden waste, engine oil, paper, plasterboard, soil and rubble, scrap metal, textiles, tyres, large domestic appliances, fridges, televisions, fluorescent tubes, small electrical appliances and wood.
The Humberfield, Airmyn, Carnaby and Preston sites can take asbestos. Preston, Humberfield, Market Weighton and Carnaby also take TetraPak food and drink cartons.
