The curse of the Manager Month award struck again as Manager Healey saw his side lose out to the odd goal in thirteen after only hours earlier collecting the plaudits after his team completed a magic October with five wins out of five.
With keeper Bryce away at a Bar Mitzvah, Moley relied on youth in goal and this seemed to unsettle the defence who endured an error strewn afternoon on a truly horrific leisure centre pitch. Molescroft were also without stalwart left back Richard Dixon who was recovering after having a “Cher” style rib removal operation earlier in the week. When questioned by team mates as to why he’d gone through with this, his only answer was that he was a DIY fan and was likely to start smoking! Although his teammates accepted this was more than just a minor operation the general feeling was that he was running scared of the Withernsea forward who was involved in the “Barge-gate” scandal with him two weeks ago.
The match couldn’t have started any better for Molescroft and they took the lead after only a couple of minutes with top scorer Spruce netting for his 13th of the season and also continuing his run of scoring in every match. This bright start was as good as it got in the first half and after a couple of missed chances, mistake after mistake left Molescroft 4-1 down at half time.
A combined team talk from Healey, Bolger and Captain Nicholson based on seeing who could shout loudest seemed to spur life into Moley and they soon brought the game back to 4-3 through goals from Spruce and Sam Dixon. After all the hard work to get the game back to a point where extra time seemed likely Molescroft again committed defensive suicide allowing Withernsea to score three more times in quick succession to all but kill the game off. To their credit Moley never gave up and almost forced extra time with an own goal and two more goals from Pikey Spruce who now has 16 goals in 9 starts. Alas it was not enough and the team that Molescroft beat 3-0 with ease only two weeks ago progressed into the third round of the cup leaving Molescroft to think what might have been. Transfer target Pete “El Matador” Turnbull was again present after returning from a caravanning holiday early to watch his future teammates throw the game away.
Next week sees Molescroft in cup action again at home to Holme Rovers Reserves with substitutes Bolger and Milner expected to push for starts after encouraging second half performances.
