The work of the council’s Building Control service has been recognised in a national awards scheme.
The former Corn Exchange in Beverley’s Saturday Market, which was converted by a local businessman into Browns department store, has won the ‘highly commended’ award (best small commercial building category) in this year’s LABC National Building Excellence Awards.
LABC is the member organisation representing local authority building control departments. Unlike other industry awards, the LABC awards recognise the importance of building control in creating a high quality, sustainable built environment. Local authority building control helps to ensure better design and builds by co-operative working between local councils, developers, designers and builders to make sure projects comply with the highest standards of safety, sustainability and accessibility.
Conversion of the old Corn Exchange, a Grade two Listed building, was a complex and time-consuming task but the end result has won widespread recognition and has added to Beverley’s retail offer.
Councillor Symon Fraser, the council’s portfolio holder for environment and planning, said: “Many congratulations to Building Control and the developers for working together so well. The award is well deserved recognition of their key roles in achieving a successful change of use for a high profile building in the centre of Beverley.”
