The second race in the East Yorkshire Cross-Country League took place at Drewton Woods, near South Cave last Sunday. It was a gloriously sunny autumn morning and the ground was soft but not muddy making conditions perfect for a good race.
There was an excellent turn out from all clubs but the race was dominated by City of Hull who took first place in both the men’s and ladies’ team competitions.
Beverley Athletic Club fielded a strong men’s team with James Pearson back after his excellent performance in the Abingdon Marathon last month. However it was Matt Chadwick in his first season with Beverley who was first to cross the line. He finished in seventh place overall in 40.31. Pete Fielding-Smith put in a very strong performance and was the next Beverley runner to finish, just ahead of Pearson. Steve Jackson, Neil Bant and Andy Johnson made up the team which came second overall.
In her first cross-country race, new member Rachel Kirk was the first Beverley lady to finish. She was thrilled with her performance and proud to lead her team across the finishing line. She was followed by Lucy Stamford and Clare Bracken, both seasoned cross-country runners.
Carrie Smith made a welcome return to running after giving birth to her son in May and was joined by her brother David in his first race for Beverley.
The race was won by City of Hull’s Stuart Carmichael who finished in 36.36, over a minute faster than last year and 3 minutes ahead of second placed Jim Rogers. Scarborough’s Katy Rawnsley was the first lady to finish, crossing the line in 44.09.
After two races City of Hull lead the men’s competition with Scarborough in second place and Beverley have now moved up to third. Beverley ladies are currently in fourth place behind City of Hull, Scarborough and Driffield.
The next race in the league is at Langdale End on 12 December.
