Students from schools in Beverley held a peaceful protest outside County Hall and the Conservative Party office in Beverley.
According to the police, around 100 young people showed up and it was all in good spirit, with some of the students lying down in the snow on the road.
Mutual respect was shown by the authorities and by the protesters, and those leading the protest ensured good behaviour. However, students were refused the right to march through the centre of Beverley on safety grounds.
Ian Lunny, who helped organise the protest, said;
“The government are creating a system that will only benefit the very rich, and the poorer will be pushed down. Education will no longer be about how smart you are but if you are privileged enough to afford the fees.”
“Us sixth formers are looking into the future. We know that these rises will affect all of us, but I am sure some of you reading this will be affected also.”
“Also we are extremely disappointed that the Liberal Democrats have broken their promise, and that Nick Clegg will not say sorry for this. We hope that today the Liberal Democrats will reconsider.”
MP Responds To Student’s Protest In Beverley
Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, was not in his office but in London for today’s vote on student fees.
In a statement released, he welcomed the right to peacefully protest while urging the students to look closely at the proposed plans for higher education.
The proposals would see new graduates on lower incomes pay less than they do under the current scheme.
