Beverley in Bloom wants your ideas about how they can make Beverley look beautiful this year. You are invited to an open day to come and chat to members of the group, to see what the group does, to give your ideas and feedback and to get more involved if you want to.
The event is on Thursday January 20th between 11am and 2pm at the Town Council office at 12 Well Lane, Beverley. Light refreshments will be available.
The Beverley in Bloom group is holding a launch event for 2011 as they think ahead to the Spring season. After a successful year in 2010, when they achieved the top award in their group in the ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ competition, they have decided to take a year out from the competition and focus their efforts on re-structuring their resources.
Group Chairman Jim Whitfield said ‘The event is all about encouraging participation and looking at how people can get involved. Whether it’s identifying areas for improvement, growing plants on behalf of the group or getting together with neighbours to look after local communal areas, we want to involve as many people as possible and there are all sorts of ways to do this.’
As well as working with individual volunteers, the group has worked with the junior schools in Beverley and businesses such as Beverley Racecourse and want to extend their involvement with schools, community groups and local businesses. Representatives from any such groups are invited to come along to the Springboard open event.
The restructure does not mean the end of beautiful floral displays around the town but in the current climate of cutbacks, the group is being forced to rethink their approach. Many plants will need to be grown ‘in-house’ and sustainable planting will become more of a feature alongside the traditional bedding plants. The group gets some financial backing from the Town Council, including the support of members of staff but they are now looking into fundraising and sponsorship and would welcome contact from anyone able to help in these areas.
‘Looking ahead, we would like to enter the Yorkshire in Bloom competition in the future but it can be easy to forget that the work in the town is more important than the competition result and we wanted to take a step back and re-evaluate. We really hope that people will come forward with their views and support our efforts.’
For any enquiries or anyone unable to attend who wants to put forward ideas or volunteer please contact the Town Council on 01482 308311.
