Help With Making the Step up to Higher Education

Help is available for people who are preparing to make the step up to university or another type of higher education in the form of East Riding College’s Bite Size study skills courses.

These level four (A-levels are level three) short courses last for six weeks and give participants valuable preparation for the higher education style of writing, researching and studying.

Anyone who successfully completes the course will earn 10 university credits which are validated by the University of Hull and which will give extra weight to an application to study at university.

A number of them are due to run over the next six months, with the first starting on Monday, January 31, from 6pm to 9pm at the College’s Gallows Lane campus in Beverley.

Assistant director Alison Gray said: “There is quite a big difference between level three courses such as A-levels and BTEC diplomas and higher level courses, not only in the complexity of what you learn but also in the way you learn.

“These Bite Size courses enable you to find out about things like higher level writing styles, reading and note taking, referencing source materials and planning longer essays and will really make the transition to higher learning a lot easier.”

The Bite Size courses cover the following areas, all of which are essential to higher level courses: time management; formal English; learning styles; avoiding plagiarism through referencing; sources of information and evaluation; skim reading, reading and note taking; making the most of lectures; planning and writing an essay; critical thinking; working as a group; presentation skills; and a visit to a university.

The course is free for existing students at East Riding College and costs £75 for all others. Further Bite Size courses will be held over the next 10 months.
