Sullys Beat Blue and Golds in Close Encounter

The Blue and Golds let a lead slip for the second successive week and went down to a very disappointing defeat at the Beverley Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Leading 12-6 midway through the second half and seemingly in the ascendancy, a restart kick was allowed to go into touch allowing the visitors possession in the Beverley half. Bilton scored off the resultant set of six and quickly added another score to effectively seal victory.

However the hosts nearly rescued a point when Louis Hubbards’ try two minutes from time allowed Steve Jonson the opportunity to level the scores. The conversion drifted narrowly wide in the difficult blustery conditions.

The first half was a low scoring affair with both sides finding handling tricky in the near gale force swirling wind. The visitors got the only score of the half to lead 6-0 at the interval. The hosts came out for the second half with a spring in their step and it quickly paid dividends. Steve Jonson’s kick ahead on the last tackle saw him re-gather the ball to dive in beneath the posts and convert his own try.

The momentum continued and Pete Newton went close to scoring after a typical 50 metre bustling run required a last ditch tackle from the full back to deny him. The all important score came shortly after with Steve Davidson breaking through to draw the full back perfectly and send Gavin Proctor over besides the posts. The conversion was added and Beverley seemed to be cruising to victory until the error from the kick off.

Louis Hubbard took the Man of the Match award proving a constant threat with his strong running. Steve Davidson was a close second as he directed the troops well from the loose forward position. Ian Pollard also got through a marathon tackling stint.

This Saturday sees Beverley take on their closest rivals from the East Riding. They travel to the Roy Waudby Complex to take on Cottingham Tigers. The Tigers knocked Beverley out of the Tom Beautiman Cup earlier in the season so they currently hold the bragging rights.

Coach Rich Shaw has still to see his side find that elusive killer instinct. He commented; ”One of these days it will all come together and a few teams will take a hammering”. Saturday’s game kicks off at 2pm.
