Mohicans Win Tense Encounter With St Andrews

On a muddy pitch at Longcroft, the Beverley Town Mohicans entertained St Andrews and looked to put Billy Gill’s coaching in to practice.

St Andrews seemed intent on appealing against every decision which created a tense atmosphere for the lads and it appeared to knock them off their game.

A few close shots and some bad control meant Mohicans didn’t score until midway through the half when Callum Ward played a great ball to Oliver Morrison who finished very well against a tall goal keeper.

More chances came and went but when the Mohicans had a disputed throw-in in their own half Sam Tuft and Dan Naldrett got the ball to Jamie Spence who passed to Marc O’Hare who duly scored.

When a close offside decision went against St Andrews one of their staff called all their players off the pitch and only some calming by stand-in referee Jon Spence allowed a ten minute break before the game could resume.

The last ten minutes continued in a tense atmosphere but the Mohicans started to gain control.

For the second half Jake Tuft bravely took over and agreed to referee the match. Within three minutes he was being questioned by the St Andrews’ management when a shot from Dan Naldrett went in at the near post but then through a hole in the back of the net. After eight minutes Callum Ward played a precision ball to Oliver Morrison who made it 4-0.

The Mohicans were playing by far the better football, despite the fouls that were being made. Next Sam Tuft played in Will Collingwood to make it five, and soon after played in Callum Ward who made it 6-0.

St Andrews then pulled one back and were then awarded a penalty when Greg Whyley unfortunately fell in to a forward. Charlie Brooks stood tall and put the penalty taker under pressure.  He could only hit the post and the danger passed. Steve Heath was making some amazing dribbles taking on four and five players at a time.

He was rewarded from one of these with a fantastic finish to make the final score 7-1.

Man of the Match went to Steve Heath, but well done to everyone, referees included, to get the game finished and won.
