The Welsh Society of Kingston-upon-Hull presented a cheque for £1100 to Steven Oliver a representative of the Teenage Cancer Trust. The money raised is to be put towards the Young Adult Unit at Castle Hill Hospital.
The Teenage Cancer Trust, a national charity devoted to improving the lives of young people with cancer, plans to develop a £150,000 specialist facility for young cancer patients in our region.
The plans include a four-bed unit at the Queen’s Centre for Oncology and Haematology at Castle Hill Hospital which will provide teenage cancer patients from Hull and other parts of Yorkshire with some of the best facilities and options in the country.
The Teenage Cancer Trust funds specialist teenage cancer units in NHS hospitals that are designed to give teenagers the very best chance of a positive outcome. There are currently 17 of these units across the country, including three in Yorkshire. The charity plans to build a further 16 so that all young people needing hospital treatment for cancer across the UK have access to the dedicated, specialist support they provide.
The new unit will include four beds, a kitchen and a bathroom as well as a recreational space including a TV and the latest games consoles. The Teenage Cancer Trust needs to raise over £150,000 to develop this facility and expand services for young people in our area.
The Society organised a concert with the Driffield Male Voice Choir at the Guildhall, Hull on 23 October 2010 and all the proceeds are being given to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Since its foundation over 60 years ago, the Welsh Society of Kingston-upon-Hull has acted as a focal point for people connected with or interested in Wales and things Welsh. You do not have to be Welsh to join – all that is needed is an interest in Wales, no matter how tenuous.
The Society meets at 7.45 pm on the third Friday of the month at Cottingham Parks Golf & Leisure Club from September to May. These are, in the main, social occasions, although it does attempt to broaden its members’ education from time to time!
If you are interested, why not come along to a few of the meetings and see what you think. You are guaranteed a very friendly welcome. For more information contact the Chairman, Mark Morgan, on 01482 701658 or go to www.welshsocietyhull.org.uk
