Humber Colts’ boss Tony Henderson declared himself “delighted with the growth and progression” of his young side as they continued their march to promotion.
The Colts’ class showed in a scrappy game where their all-round play deserved better than the 2-0 victory they gained at home against Cottingham Rangers Juniors A on Sunday.
The tone was set early on as the Colts, backed by a strong home support, crashed into tackles and unsettled their Hull Men’s Sunday League Division Three Wyke
opponents.
It was Danny Atkinson who settled the nerves with a magnificent header early in the first half. Strong play down the left led to a Colts’ corner and Atkinson leapt above a static visiting defence to head home Mark Frampton’s pinpoint delivery.
With the Colts playing all the attacking football, it was only a matter of time before they made their superiority count.
Strong play from Frampton drew a heavy challenge in the box and although the referee took some time to point to the spot, Mark ‘Swampy’ Claxton held his nerve and fired home to make it 2-0, despite the visiting keeper guessing the right way.
The second-half saw the Colts under little pressure, but their lack of creativity, despite overwhelming possession, left Henderson a little irritated.
He told HU17.net: “I am pleased with a clean sheet, but I felt we should have scored more goals. “The score line really did not do us justice, but this is a young team and I am delighted with their growth and progression over the course of the season.
“We are now pushing for back to back wins when we play Dee Street next weekend – we have now scored 16 goals and conceded just four in our last three games so we are going well at the moment.
“It was a good three points and we are looking to get even better over the next few weeks.”
