Beverley 1st XI beat Studley Royal By 9 Wickets

These are early days but Beverley Town Cricket Club 1st XI have played two games and been hugely impressive in both. After demolishing Goole Town’s batting last week it was the turn of the Town opening batsmen to produce a superb display on another excellent Norwood Recreation Ground surface, but not before Matthew Mudd had turned in one of his best bowling performances for the team.

Studley Royal made a steady start against Peter Groves and Alex Morrell (1-50) but it was the introduction of Mudd that saw the wickets begin to fall. An economical spell by Steve Blake supplemented Mudd’s marathon spell of 21 overs, 6 for 67 (four maidens). Studley ended their fifty overs on 195 for 8.

Town openers Jamie Mitchell and Groves then proceeded to unveil a batting master class suited to the excellent wicket. They put together a record-breaking partnership of 187 runs in 130 minutes that ended only when Groves miscued to mid-on. Groves recorded his first 1st XI century making 107. His innings contained 18 boundaries and his powerful stroke play, particularly through the v, was a delight to watch. Mitchell made a more circumspect beginning as Groves powered his way ahead but a glorious straight drive was the signal for him to move into top gear. Mitchell hit seven fours in an unbeaten 78 as last weeks centurion Jon Fisher, relegated to a minor role this week, hit two boundaries to seal an emphatic win in the 38th over.
