Beverley Town Cricket Club 2nd XI just couldn’t keep up with the scoring rate as they secured a losing draw at home to Londesborough Park at the Norwood Recreation Ground on Saturday.
They looked to be in pole position midway through their innings as they set about chasing 200 off a rain-reduced 41 overs.
But when they lost Olly Grantham – bowled by a ball he admits he misjudged – for an aggressive 63, their innings faltered and they fell 15 short on 184-7.
On the usual good track, in spite of the inclement weather, the visitors set a stiff target.
Matt Smith was the pick of the home bowlers, finishing with 4-52 off 10 overs, but the damage had been done earlier as all the batsmen contributed to the Londesborough total of 199-5.
Beverley started their reply well before Tim Smith fell for 13.
Grantham joined William Wilson at the crease and the shots started to flow, although the pair did hit a lot of straight and off drives to the fielders.
When Wilson went the onus fell on Grantham to take the game by the scruff of the neck and this he did until the introduction of Londesborough leggy Sam Medley.
He tied down Grantham and the left-hander eventually fell to medium pacer George Drewery after picking the wrong ball to leave.
There were some lusty blows from the late middle order but Simon Roe’s dismissal – picking the lone man at cow corner – summed up the lack of fortune of Beverley.
As the rain closed in again, Peter Parnaby and James Emery saw out the innings with Beverley closing on 184-7.
