Novice Runner Pam Appleton’s Beverley 10K Success

Pam Appleton and Janice Shaw competed in their first ever Beverley 10K on Sunday and finished the course in 1 hour 26 minutes.

Pam a novice runner told HU17.net: “When we got to Newbald a race marshal turned to us and said, I do not want to dishearten you ladies, but the race leader, Darran Bilton, will be finishing in six minutes!”

“The worst bit was when we reached the crossing for Walkington, I looked back and all that was behind us was a marshal and a police car, behind the police car was all the held-up traffic.”

“A marshal called Steve Hadley was a great help, he stayed with us for the closing stages of the race offering lots of moral support all the way to the finish line.”

Pam and Janice raised over £1500 for Bega Kwa Bega, a Ugandan charity that helps orphans.

The money raised by the ladies achievement will be used to buy medical supplies and mosquito nets.

Although Pam will not be entering next year’s Beverley 10K she did say that she will continue to train, but made it clear that she does not see her future in running.

Pam said: “I will carry on training; had I not entered the race I may not have discovered the pleasures of keeping fit.”
